Chautauqua: Latina Perspective on Politics

Published on September 09, 2016

Award-winning reporter and news anchor Maria Hinojosa will provide “A Latina Perspective on the Politics of 2016” when she speaks at Eastern Kentucky University on Thursday, Sept. 22.

Hinojosa will deliver the University’s annual Hispanic Heritage Month Keynote Address at 7:30 p.m. in O’Donnell Hall of the Whitlock Building. Her talk, free and open to the public, is part of the University’s year-long Chautauqua lecture series. The theme this year is “Order and Chaos.”

As the anchor and executive producer of National Public Radio’s only Latino news and culture show, “Latino USA,” and anchor and executive producer for the PBS series “America by the Numbers with Maria Hinojosa,” she has informed millions about the changing cultural and political landscape in America and abroad. This year, she became the host of “In the Thick,” Futuro’s new political podcast, and “Humanizing America,” the company’s digital video series.

In more than 25 years as a journalist, Hinojosa has worked for CNN, PBS, CBS, WNBC and WGBH. She was the first Latina to anchor a “Frontline” report, aired in 2011. “Lost in Detention" explored abuse at immigrant detention facilities, garnering attention from the Capitol to both the mainstream and Spanish-language media.

Hinojosa has received numerous awards for her work, including four Emmys, the 2012 John Chancellor Award for Excellence in Journalism; Robert F. Kennedy Award for Reporting on the Disadvantaged; the Studs Terkel Community Media Award; and the Edward R. Murrow Award from the Overseas Press Club for best documentary for her groundbreaking “Child Brides: Stolen Lives.”

The Mexico City native is also the author of two books, “Raising Raul: Adventures Raising Myself and My Son,” and “Crews: Gang Members Talk with Maria Hinojosa,” an in-depth collection of interviews with gang members in New York City.

The Hinojosa lecture is sponsored by the Department of Languages, Cultures & Humanities; the Department of Anthropology, Sociology and Social Work; the Office of Diversity; and EKU Honors.
