Dr. Cristóbal Salinas Jr., an award-winning advocate for social justice, diversity, equity and inclusion, is scheduled to give the Hispanic Heritage Keynote address entitled, “Navigating Latinx/*: Challenging Norms of Language, Patriarchy and Gender” on Thursday, October 7 at 7:30 p.m. as part of EKU’s Chautauqua Lecture Series.

Salinas migrated from Mexico to the U.S. during middle school, forcing him to adapt to a new culture and learn a new language. Those experiences provided him with an awareness and understanding of the challenges that many multicultural students face within education and have framed his professional, research and teaching interests.
After earning his Bachelor’s degree in Spanish Education and ESL from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, Salinas completed his Master of Education degree in Educational Leadership & Policy Studies and a Ph.D. in Higher Education at Iowa State University.
Now an Associate Professor in the Educational Leadership and Research Methodology Department at Florida Atlantic University, Salinas’ research promotes access and equality in higher education and explores the social and political context of education opportunities for historically marginalized communities.
He is founder and editor-in-chief for the Journal Committed to Social Change on Race and Ethnicity, published in partnership with the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in American Higher Education (NCORE). He has published 22 peer-reviewed articles and 27 book chapters and co-edited five collections, including most recently, Studying Latinx/a/o Students in Higher Education: A Critical Analysis of Concepts, Theory and Methodologies (Routledge, 2021). He has received more than 25 national and international awards for his work in this area and has been featured on CNN, CNN Español, NPR, Telemundo and Good Morning America.
