An upcoming walk at Eastern Kentucky University will raise funds toward erecting a statue at the Veterans Memorial on the Richmond campus.
The 2016 Veterans Memorial Walk will be held on Tuesday, March 8 (a change from the earlier announced date), from 6 to 9 p.m., in Alumni Coliseum. The event is similar to a Relay for Life event, with teams encouraged to have a walker on the indoor course at all times. However, individuals can walk as much or as little as they wish.
Participants will traverse the Coliseum’s concourse and auxiliary gym in a loop. On-site registration begins at 4 p.m., and teams may assemble in the bleachers, auxiliary gym or along the course.
“Our purpose is twofold,” said Dr. Bryan Cole, director of EKU’s Office of Military and Veteran Affairs. “One is to raise money for the statue at the memorial. The second is to provide recognition to our veteran students, faculty and staff and to those veterans who live in the Madison County area.”
Advance registration (www.ekuveteransmemorialwalk.myevent.com) is $10 for students and $15 for all others; those who register by March 2 will receive a free t-shirt bearing the design for the statue. The registration cost on the day of the event is $20.
The event is sponsored by the EKU Vets Club, the Office of Military and Veteran Affairs, the University Diversity Office, and Healthy You! at EKU.
