Model Band Room Dedicated to Campbell

Published on October 18, 2017

The Model Laboratory School band room was dedicated recently in honor of Ronald E. Campbell, the first drum major of the school’s marching band.

Campbell, a 1966 graduate of the school, was killed in action in Cambodia on May 12, 1970, while serving in the U.S. Army. His brother, Larry Joe Campbell, and his sister, Brenda Campbell Salter, were among those bringing remarks at the dedication ceremony, along with Bob Cloyd, president of the graduating class; Lt. Col. (USMC) Mike Elder (Ret.), Class of 1966; and Harry Clarke, Model Band director from 1963 to 1965.

A plaque in Campbell’s honor reads: “Around Ronnie, we always felt most naturally at our very best. Be still in peace with honor, beloved brother and friend.”

Dr. Eric Parker, executive director of Model Laboratory School, brought the welcome; EKU ROTC presented and retired colors; and members of the Model Band, under the direction of Erik Sokolowski, presented special music, including “Taps.”

The event was attended by many other Model alumni.
