Stylish and sustainable will collide at Eastern Kentucky University’s annual Trash Fash.
The runway show, hosted by the Office of Sustainability, will take place this year on Thursday, March 29, at 7 p.m. in the Keen Johnson Ballroom. Creative students are encouraged to participate by featuring their original, wearable artwork made of recycled or upcycled materials.
“Trash Fash gives students the excellent opportunity to let their creativity shine while remaining environmentally conscious,” said Emma Carnesecca, a student worker in the Office of Sustainability. “The goal of this event is to promote recycling on campus and prompt students to look for alternate uses for their waste materials.”
According to Carnesecca, students have upcycled materials such as magazines, cardboard, newspaper, plastic bags, playing cards and ties into wearable art. If artists do not wish to model their own designs, the Office of Sustainability will connect designers to models, or vice versa.
The show is free and open to the public. To participate, students must register at sustainability.eku.edu/trash-fash-2018-submission-form by March 26. Carnesecca said that in years past, Trash Fash has hosted as many as 40 participants and 200-300 spectators.
The top prizes of $250 each will be awarded to winners in the categories of “Best in Show” and “People’s Choice.” Four other categories, “I’d Totally Wear That,” “Most Outrageous,” “Best Recycled/Upcycled Content” and “Best Team Entry,” will receive a minimum of $50 in gift cards from Don Senor, the Paddy Wagon and Golden Corral.
