Dr. Sherry Powers, dean of the College of Education at Eastern Kentucky University, was recently appointed by Gov. Matt Bevin to serve on the Education Commission of the States (ECS).
Powers was among four new members named.
The Commission is an interstate compact created in 1965 to improve public education by facilitating the exchange of information, ideas and experiences among state policymakers and education leaders. As a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization involving key leaders from all levels of the education system, ECS creates unique opportunities to build partnerships, share information and promote the development of policy based on available research and strategies.
Earlier this year, Powers was appointed to serve a four-year term on the Commonwealth’s Education Professional Standards Board.
Before joining EKU in June, Powers had served as dean of the School of Education at Asbury University the past four years. Previously, she served 13 years at Western Kentucky University, the last three as associate dean and director of its School of Teacher Education in the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences. She began her career as a classroom teacher, teaching eight years in Hindman, Harrodsburg and Nicholasville, and received the Ashland Oil Teacher Achievement Award in 1995.
