Dr. Sherry Powers, dean of the College of Education at Eastern Kentucky University, was recently appointed by Gov. Matt Bevin to serve on the Commonwealth’s Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB).
Powers was among nine new members named, and the only higher education representative.
“EKU is very fortunate to have a dean of education who is so highly regarded in the professional education community,” said Dr. Janna Vice, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. “Dr. Powers will be an effective advocate for postsecondary education and teacher preparation in Kentucky.”
The EPSB, in collaboration with its education partners, promotes high levels of student achievement by establishing and enforcing rigorous professional standards for preparation, certification, and responsible and ethical behavior of all professional educators in Kentucky.
Before joining EKU in June, Powers had served as dean of the School of Education at Asbury University the past four years. Previously, she served 13 years at Western Kentucky University, the last three as associate dean and director of its School of Teacher Education in the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences. She began her career as a classroom teacher, teaching eight years in Hindman, Harrodsburg and Nicholasville, and received the Ashland Oil Teacher Achievement Award in 1995.
Her term on the EPSB runs through 2020.
