Farmers Market Continues into October

Published on June 04, 2015

The Madison County Farmers Market will remain on the EKU campus into October.

It will be located in the parking lot between Palmer and Dupree Halls each Thursday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., through mid-August. The Fall Farmers Market returns to campus Aug. 27 in the Powell Visitor Lot and remains there until October.

The market offers fresh produce, meat and baked goods. It is hosted on campus by Healthy You! at EKU, the University’s wellness program.  Healthy You! will have a booth at the market to demonstrate healthy ways to prepare the food available.

“We want to bring community and healthy options together on campus,” said Tammy Cornett, coordinator for Human Resources communications. “People get to meet their local farmers and make good choices. And from my experience, everything is priced competitively.”

Because the produce is locally grown, selection depends on what is in season throughout the summer and fall. Cornett expects greens, onions, zucchinis, green tomatoes and radishes to be among the vegetables available when the market opens. Throughout the season jams, jellies and fried apple pies made from homegrown fruits are also sold.

Students, faculty and community members are all encouraged to visit. “You’re supporting your local farmer,” Cornett said. “You know where your produce is coming from. You know it’s fresh. And it’s a good feeling knowing you’re buying local.”

Visitors who sign in at the farmers market are also entered in a drawing for a gift card to use at the following week’s market.

The Madison County Farmers Market has been in operation for 20 years and has been hosted once a week on EKU’s campus since 2012. The market also operates 8 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and Saturdays in the Lowe’s parking lot.
