EKU to Grant Automatic Advanced Placement Scholarships

Published on June 14, 2019

A new scholarship to Eastern Kentucky University for Advanced Placement (AP) students will automatically award up to $2,400 to students who score a 3, 4 or 5 on AP tests, it was announced at the Advanced Placement Summer Institute Luncheon Wednesday afternoon.

The Study Strong Scholarship seeks to incentivize and recruit students doing college-level work in high school.

Students scoring a 5 on an AP examination will automatically receive $300 per exam (up to eight exams), students earning a 4 will receive $225 per exam, and students scoring a 3 will receive $150 per exam in scholarship money toward their education at EKU. Students can be awarded for up to eight exam scores with scores of 3 or higher.

Administrators said it gives some of the best and brightest high school students in Kentucky another incentive to come to Eastern Kentucky University.

“At EKU, we’re trying to get the best students on our campus, and in order to do that, we’ve created this new scholarship,” said John Williamson, Dean of K-12 Programming and Superintendent of Model Lab School. “So this is an extra bonus on top of any scholarships or awards they would get.”

In addition, each of the 250 AP teachers attending the AP Summer Institute was given a $500 scholarship to award to any junior or senior AP student of their choice to attend EKU.

“This sort of scholarship allows teachers to reward hard work in the classroom or students who want to major in a certain subject,” Williamson said. “We want to reward them in the same way as we reward duel credit. It’s an additional way to recruit good students to come to EKU.”
