Nine students in Eastern Kentucky University’s College of Justice & Safety have each been awarded $1,000 Distance Education Scholarships to use toward their pursuit of EKU Online bachelor’s degrees in occupational safety or master’s degrees in safety, security and emergency management.
“I am always impressed by our students and their commitment to the profession,” said Tom Schneid, chair of the EKU Department of Safety, Security and Emergency Management. “By continuing their education, they increase their expertise and become more competitive in the job market. Our hope is that this new scholarship rewards their hard work and helps them pursue their goals.”
The Distance Education Scholarship was created to benefit students in the EKU Online safety and security programs. Winners are selected based on prior academic achievement and an essay regarding their career goals in the safety and health industry. All students who enrolled during the Fall 2018 semester were invited to apply.
In their essays, students exemplified the passion that safety professionals have for their work. They expressed their desire to grow within the safety field and outlined how their expanded education would help improve safety conditions for their current employers. “I never want someone’s job to be the reason they were not afforded a long and healthy life,” wrote scholarship recipient Amy MacAdams, of Richmond, pursuing an online master’s degree in safety, security and emergency management.
Winners of the Distance Education Scholarship for an online bachelor’s degree in occupational safety are Virginia Cespedes, Deltona, Florida; Karen LaRue, West Chester Ohio; Delta Wells, Eubank, Kentucky; and Kimberly Wiskirchen, Mesa, Arizona.
In addition to MacAdams, scholarship recipients for the online master’s degree program in safety, security and emergency management are James Manuel, East Bernstadt, Kentucky; Levi Scott, Enfield, North Carolina; Katrina Stewart, Brighton, Tennessee; and Wesley Gibson, Cordova, Tennessee
